Rose and Joseph Denaro (Circa 1958)
"They instilled in their children an intense compassion for people."
A lifelong resident of Rochester, New York, Joseph is a retired Rochester City Firefighter who was a charter organizer of the Rochester Firefighters Union. As an inventor, business owner and linguist, Joseph was affectionately referred to as The Renaissance Man of the Rochester Community. In his youth, Joseph was a star basketball player at East High School, receiving numerous awards for athletics, sportsmanship, and academic study. He and Rose, his wife of 66 years, met at the University of Rochester. A stellar husband, father, role model, religious man and community leader, Joseph devoted his life to his family. With hard work and a strong scholarly ethic, Joseph and Rose prepared their three sons and daughter for leadership positions in business, law, and the education profession.
Born in Berlin, New Hampshire, Rose became a life-long resident of Rochester, New York. A community volunteer, Rose held numerous board and leadership positions: The Council of Social Agencies Board, Co-Founder and officer of the St. Andrews Seminary Parents Association and Director of the Merimac Club for Singles.
In the 1960's Rose served as Chairperson of two, consecutive, Catholic Youth Organization drives; breaking all records for the then, twenty-eight year history of the Rochester CYO. The late Monsignor Arthur Ratigan, former Director of the Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Rochester, praised her dedication for "increasing financial support through the CYO campaigns; enabling the expansion of the CYO facilities and programs; making moral and recreational benefits more available for girls and boys in the Rochester area".
Interviewed frequently on Rochester television, Rose was also featured in the late Bill Beeney's D&C column for balancing her role as wife, mother and professional while Associate Director and Registrar of the Hochstein Memorial Music School on Holtzer Street. In addition, until the early 1990's Rose was a dedicated equestrian, earning numerous ribbons for her equitation.
